There’s really no way to over-emphasize the importance of these regularly scheduled visits with the dentist. Taking care of your smile today ensures the continued health and attractive appearance of your smile for many, many tomorrows.
For a comprehensive dental checkup, Carrollton residents know they can count on Dr. Campbell.
Dental Cleaning and Exam
Each dental checkup is comprised of two parts: the dental cleaning and the dental examination. During a cleaning, one of our skilled dental hygienists cleans each of your teeth individually, taking care to remove stains and plaque from the facial, lingual and biting surfaces of the teeth. If a small amount of tartar is found, this can be removed as well with hand instruments. The cleaning concludes with flossing in between all of your teeth in order to remove particles of food as well as plaque buildup that might otherwise lead to gum disease.
The second portion of a dental checkup is the examination. Here, we inspect your teeth and gums, looking for signs of decay or periodontal disease. Carrollton dentist, Dr. Campbell, will also be on the lookout for signs of concern such as cracks in your teeth or old dental work that is beginning to degrade. We may be able to preserve a cracked tooth with a dental crown; if old dental work is worn out, we can replace it with tooth-colored fillings, inlays, onlays or another all-ceramic restoration.
At one of your dental checkups each year, Dr. Campbell will recommend having digital x-rays. These x-rays require far less radiation than standard x-rays, and the results are immediately visible on the computer screen adjacent to the exam chair. Dr. Campbell is thus able to point out any hidden areas of decay, infection or any other problem not easily visible to the naked eye.
Oral Cancer Screening
Like any other cancer screening, oral cancer screening aims to find signs of the disease before symptoms develop. Each year, oral and pharyngeal cancer claims more than 9,000 American lives. If detected early, however, oral cancer is largely treatable and curable. That’s why we conduct this screening at each one of your dental checkups.
During the screening we look for:
- A sore that hasn’t healed
- A lump or thickened tissue
- A red or white patch that can be smooth or scaly
During this screening, we’ll check the inside of your cheeks, the roof and floor of your mouth and all sides of your tongue. We’ll also check your throat and palpate your neck and jaw. Please let us know if you’ve had a persistent sore throat or a feeling of numbness anywhere in your mouth as these can also be signs of oral cancer.
