Importance of Regular Dental Checkup Appointments

July 2, 2013

As a Carrollton-area general dentist, many patients over the years have asked me why they need to come in for their dental checkup. They tell me that they’re brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing once daily. Unfortunately, these good habits alone aren’t enough to ensure good dental health.

We will check your teeth and gums for signs of oral pathology and gum disease, note and record your vital signs, and solicit from you any present or past dental concerns with an eye as to which are dentally-driven and which are caused by your medications.  These things are serious threats not only to your dental health, but to your overall health as well.

As part of your routine checkup we also clean your teeth, removing plaque that can harden into tartar and potentially create problems if left on your teeth for too long. We observe standard of care frequency for needed x-rays.  If you have any cavities, cracks, or damage anywhere in your smile, we will identify these concerns and make plans to address them as necessary. We want all of our patients to have healthy, beautiful smiles.

While it’s very important that you’re practicing good home healthcare and are brushing and flossing your teeth, that’s not enough. To ensure that your smile is truly healthy, you need to visit our office twice a year for your general dentistry checkup appointment. Take care of your smile now, and it will last you a lifetime.
