Crowns, Inlays, and Onlays

Structural tooth damage or extensive decay may require more than traditional fillings, in which case Dr. Campbell often recommends an inlay, onlay, or crown.

Made in a dental lab, inlays and onlays are milled pieces of porcelain that offer a more conservative option than a crown, but they don't work for all situations. Inlays fit into a cavity that lies between the cusps of a tooth, and onlays extend to cover one or more tooth cusps. When a cavity is too large for a filling to repair, an inlay or onlay may be the best option. Ceramic inlays and onlays can also replace old metal fillings to create an all-white smile.

A crown, also referred to as a cap, covers the entire surface to rebuild a tooth's structure and restore strength. We will select an all-ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or gold crown, depending on the location of the tooth.

Back teeth require a very strong restoration because of the intense biting pressure they must withstand, so a metal or partially metal crown, inlay, or onlay may be recommended. Front teeth don't have to be quite as strong, but they do need to be attractive. Dr. Campbell usually recommends ceramic restorations for front teeth.

Crowns, inlays, and onlays require two appointments. At the first visit, Dr. Campbell will prepare your tooth and take impressions for the dental lab. We will fit you with a temporary restoration at this appointment. Once we receive your custom restoration from the lab, you will return for permanent placement.

Call our Carrollton dental office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Campbell and discuss how inlays, onlays, and crowns can change your smile. Conveniently located in Carrollton, we serve residents from Plano, Lewisville, and across the metroplex.

Smile Makeovers

Ready for a whole new smile? Before we begin treatment, we can show you how it will look with a 3D wax model of your mouth. We’ll even make a special model that you can put in your mouth to see just how great you’ll look when your treatment is complete.

Comprehensive Examinations

Our comprehensive examinations begin with a complete medical history, vital signs, and oral cancer screening. We then conduct a thorough exam of your teeth and gums and other soft tissue to ensure the most accurate assessment. Using an intraoral camera, we will show you any areas of concern so you will understand your treatment plan.

Referrals

Occasionally, we feel that a patient with a more complicated or severe problem—an impacted wisdom tooth or advanced periodontal disease, for example—would benefit from the services of a specialist in that area. In these cases, we can refer patients to specialists whom we know and trust to provide the same high quality of care that we provide.

For Your Comfort

We want you to feel that our office is an oasis of calm in your life. You can listen to music on our noise-canceling headphones and lay back in the dental chair with pillows and blankets we provide. To help you with your anxiety level during your treatment, we also offer nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) and oral and IV sleep sedation. Tell us the comfort level you desire.
